This past season of Teen Mom OG has been particularly hard on Catelynn Lowell and her husband, Tyler Baltierra. The hardships began when the couple opened up about the harrowing miscarriage they had suffered.
Even though many reports rumored that Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra recently suffered a miscarriage, the couple itself has been relatively quiet on the subject. Catelynn has been vocal about her decision to get treatment for her depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts, but until recently it wasn’t clear what the tipping point was that made her choose to get treatment. But soon, they opened up about the hardship.
“It was very traumatic,” Tyler recalled while cameras rolled on Teen Mom OG. It was clear that he was extremely shaken by this update as well. “You see her shaking and she got blood everywhere, you don’t know what to do.”
After Catelynn stopped losing blood, it became clear what had happened. “She kind of cleaned herself up and we figured what was going on.” Then, the couple shut down. “We sat in the bed and cried. Just held each other. There’s nothing you can really do.”
Catelynn got medical attention to confirm that she had indeed miscarried. It wasn’t much longer after that that Catelynn checked into a treatment center for having suicidal thoughts. In a later scene, Tyler broke down after learning his wife was in a bad place.
“When you love someone like that and they say that, it’s like...” he said, and then started to cry.
Catelynn soon left for rehab to seek counseling for her suicidal thoughts. But in the meantime, Tyler was suffering as well. “I really wanted that baby,” he said through tear in the episode. “LIfe’s just not giving me a break right now.”
Since then, Tyler has been very vocal about his mental health, including his recent reveal that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Catelynn revealed the information when she hinted at “Tyler’s recent diagnosis” during a reunion special with Dr. Drew. When Dr. Drew asked Tyler to clarify, Tyler revealed that he has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. After the show, he took to Twitter to share that he hadn’t agreed to let Catelynn share the information.
“Honestly, I wasn’t even planning on releasing that info,” Tyler shared on Twitter. “But once Cate mentioned about my recent diagnosis, I figured ‘what the hell? Like why am I so against telling anyone?”
Luckily, things turned out for the best. “It’s actually been a little easier to digest since I have been talking about it more #KeeptalkingMH,” Tyler wrote.
Tyler has also been expressing himself in a new way: through poetry.
One reads:
”Yeah I hear all you b*tches, I hear all you hatin & tryin to belittle, but I am not brittle & you got me glitchin if you think I’m switchin, so stop all your flexin & stop all your b*tchin, your keyboard words can’t put me in stitches #KeepHatin #ItsFuelWhenImWritin ”
Another goes:
“It’s like my brain is so scattered that the moment I feel like I get what I’m after while climbing this ladder this person in the mirror just smiles through laughter, then smacks me in the face which starts the chase to this inevitable race to feeling broken, beate,n devalued, out of place & now I’m all off pace. It just leaves me shattered and every time I think about my life, my brain becomes battered with only one question...does my life really even matter!?”
After receiving concerns about his mental health from fans, Tyler eventually reached out to clear the air. He tweeted, “Listen guys, I write when I feel the emotional pain that comes from an emotional rage. I write to put some of these dark thoughts somewhere else besides my brain. This is not something to get all concerned about. This is healthy for me & an outlet to let these emotions out."
It’s clear that things aren’t going especially well for Tyler, but now he’s opening up about how his life may have turned out if it weren’t for Teen Mom OG.
After some fans started accusing Tyler of speaking out about his depression “for attention,” many jumped on board. One user wrote, “You have to WANT to get better...They seem to use it as an excuse. Oh I can’t get a job, I’m depressed. I can’t lose weight, I’m depressed. I can’t take care of my child, I’m depressed. Imagine without Teen Mom money, where would they be?"
Tyler didn’t miss a beat, shooting back, 1. I Have 2 jobs: @TierraReign & TMOG/ 2. Actually just dropped 40lbs/ 3. I have & always will take care of Nova/ 4. Without TM money? I’d probably be on drugs or in prison hahaha #FACTS," he replied to the viewer.
But Tyler made it very clear that he isn’t always happy about how fans view him. “I’m not a real human being to some of these people. To them, I’m just a soulless vessel with no feelings & my only purpose for my existence is for their entertainment & judgement. But you know what? If that makes someone truly feel better & happier, then I’m happy to do it!”
In the meantime, fans are concerned about something else in Tyler’s life: his relationship with Catelynn.
The rumors took off when Catelynn dropped “Baltierra” from her last name on Instagram.
Even though it’s just one change, it has clear implications about the state of her relationship with Tyler, and fans were quick to theorize.
“[Tyler] also didn’t post for her during Mother’s Day, which is a red flag for someone who posts the way he does. Lack of wedding rings in his recent photos isn’t a good sign either. WE WANT THE TEA!!!” wrote reddit user penny-lane21. User DrDavidsKilt theorized, “Cate prob watched the new season and has had enough of Tyler's ‘sh*t talk Cate - then cry’ meals with mommy and sissy. I know i'd be like wtf already, you know a camera is there.” User Liltidbit agreed, “I was especially perturbed by Tyler discussing Cate's mental health with his drug addled sister. Of all people! It would be hard for me to come back from just one of those conversations. IMO Tyler isn't interesting enough on his own. He has no story without Cate.”
Others were disappointed just by the thought of the longstanding couple going down this path. “I will be so very sad if they’re splitting up,” wrote user mmm3343. “I loved them from day 1 and they’ve been through so much. I did think tho that their separate traumas pulled them together and they clung to each other in a sh*t storm. So maybe it’s unhealthy in the long run. But they both seem like such genuine people and have been so open and tried so hard to be the best parents they can be.”
But Catelynn soon her last name to “Baltierra” on her Instagram account. She also shared an update, writing, “[Tyler] and I are not getting a divorce. Couples go through ups and downs that’s normal life. We are a solid couple that will work through anything life throws at us!”
Catelynn also confronted the rumors on MTV’s Total Request Live. One fan wanted to hear from the source. “Why did you decide to temporarily change your last name to Lowell on Instagram?” asked a member of the crowd.
“I think that’s funny,” Catelynn replied on the show, looking a little annoyed. “Even if I did, what if I wanted to go back to Lowell? Why does that matter?”
She explained, “I got a new phone and deleted social media, and I had to go on to post something. When I logged back in, I don’t know if it went back to the original settings or what, but people freaked out about it.”
Now it seems that Catelynn’s resolve is being tested once again. According to an inside source, the couple is working on their relationship in couple’s therapy.
Catelynn’s father himself informed Radar Online that Catelynn and Tyler are getting counseling as a couple. “It’s couples counseling for a week. They are just brushing up on some therapy,” he revealed.
Another source confirmed to Radar that the couple “definitely did take a break for a very short amount of time, privately.” The source explained, “They did it to just figure things out so Cate could find out who she is outside of her mental illness.”
