We have to talk about Starburst
Farrah Abraham is making waves left and right; So she’s giving us exactly what we expect from her. The Teen Mom OG star celebrated Easter with her family over the weekend and she’s run into more than one controversy, thanks to her social media addiction. Farrah posted a few different photos that raised concerns with fans about various aspects of her life, but we’re here to discuss one in particular.
We’re here to talk about Farrah and Sophia’s miniature horse, Starburst.
On Brand
Teen Mom OG Farrah Abraham has done a lot of things over the years that have made fans question her decision making. Sure, she’s proved herself to be adept at creating a brand (say what you will about her, but she’s committed to her "IDGAF" persona), but sometimes fans have felt that she’s crossed the line—even for her.
Love to Hate
From allegations of both spoiling and neglecting her daughter, to her treatment of her mother, to her treatment of the Teen Mom crew; Farrah’s behavior in the spotlight has made her famous, but unfortunately that fame is mostly based on how much people hate her.
Her biggest mistake?
One decision that has brought a whole mess of trouble for Farrah probably came as a surprise to the star. While she may have assumed that investing in an animal friend would soften her image, her decision to purchase the horse Starburst (and raise the animal in her backyard) has brought almost nothing but criticism from fans.
Immediate Backlash
When she first announced that Staburst had joined the family in December of last year (it seems impossible that it was that recent, but, it was), Abraham’s Facebook followers were anything but supportive.
Fans began sharing their concerns for the horse’s well-being from the get go, telling Farrah to keep in mind that Starburst might be small, but she is far from a house-pet.
Continued Criticism
Over the ensuing months, Farrah has met resistance at every turn for the way she cares for the horse. Viewers have been outraged about the decision to have Starburst live in the backyard, that the horse has been seen inside Farrah’s home on numerous occasions, and because Starburst has been dressed up and painted for different events.
Mostly, though, people have been keeping an eye on what kind of health Starburst seems to be in—and many, many of them claim that she looks bad. Like, really bad.
Another Controversy
The most recent Starburst posts came this weekend on both Farrah and Sophia’s Instagram pages: Commenters who claim to have experience raising horses of all kinds have unequivocally said that Starburst looks to be in danger—or at least showing signs that she isn’t being cared for the way that she needs to be.
Malnourished...
Just as expected, the people of Instagram took issue with everything they saw happening in the photos and videos—and probably rightly so.
User linyana89 wrote: "Farrah, seriously, that horse is too skinny! Go get help from someone who ha[s] more horse experience than you!"
"That horse does not I repeat DOES NOT look happy. Did you even do research b4 you even got the pony," another user (@angel_the_penguin) added.
User @carocardenas88 offered that, based on what Farrah was posting, Starburst "doesn’t stand a chance."
... Or Overfed?
That said, Instagrammers weren’t just concerned by how Starburst looked in the photos from her "birthday party" —they were worried about something much more tangible.
The video of Starburst with what appeared to be an entire, human, birthday cake in front of her. Apparently, that much sugar isn’t good for such a little horse and Instagram users weren’t afraid to tell Farrah.
Bad News
User @t_katherinee (who, by the way, has tons of horse pictures on her profile) seemed to sum up everyone’s concerns in these comments:
"I would hope you are consulting with an equine veterinarian regarding your horse. Your horses coat looks awful which can indicate worms, they need a dewormer every 6 months. It's okay to feed your horse sugar every once in a while it won't kill them or hurt them. But not an entire cake. That will tear him or her up. Do your research before you seriously hurt this little guy. Colic in general is dangerous, and horses can die from this even with surgical intervention. Which is very costly, especially if they are put in isolation due to contagious bacterial infections. Stick to hay, apples, carrots, pellets, sweet feed, and other horse treats from an actual feed store. Learn the signs of a malnourished animal before purchasing one and leading him or her to a death sentence. (After all you don't want to break your daughters heart) Have a nice day.
PS don't forget to help supplement with daily vitamins. Smart Pac for horses is pre measured and an extremely good brand of vitamins. Like I said consult with a vet to help you figure out what type of vitamins will be good for this horse. Also they need vaccines at least twice a year. Goodluck."
Does she even know?
Perhaps the biggest concern for fans and horse-lovers is that Farrah doesn't seem to take owning the little horse seriously. In a recent interview with MTV, Farrah said that caring Starburst was easier than caring for a dog.
"She's still under one, so we still have a lot of training for her. The vet comes to you once a year, you hang out, you have your hay, you have the alfalfa cubes, you have her grains. It's just so easy."
I don't claim to know anything about horse ownership personally, but I have had friends who've owned horses and it was far from easy—and knowledgable commenters seem to agree.
I don't know, but since there is a tiny horse life on the line, maybe this is one time that Farrah should listen to the haters?
